Information for Hair Analysis Services
A hair analysis is a scientific test which accurately measures the mineral content of the hair. Mineral content of the hair reflects the mineral content of the body’s tissues. If a mineral deficiency or excess exists in the hair, it usually indicates a mineral deficiency or excess within the body. It also indicates whether or not that mineral is bio-available.
A mineral hair analysis can also reveal a variety of different nutritional and health problems as well as the status of many organs and glands including thyroid, pituitary and adrenal function. It can detect adrenal burn-out, thyroid and pituitary dysfunction, insulin resistance, blood sugar problems, anemia, arthritis, dietary imbalances, hoof deficiencies (horses) and digestive disturbances. Biochemical imbalances also contribute to mental and emotional problems.
A hair analysis can detect these imbalances and problems whereas conventional blood testing cannot. Nutritional physiology takes place at the cellular level, not in the blood. In addition, blood levels of nutrients and minerals are kept within very narrow limits by the body and are slow to change; thus, blood levels are not a true reflection of the nutrient status within the tissues, organs and glands which are all often depleted. In contrast, tissue mineral analysis provides information about cellular activity within the tissues and the metabolism of all nutrients throughout the body.
Common causes of a mineral imbalance is improper diet or feed program, inappropriate supplement program, medications, stress and/or the accumulation of toxic or heavy metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic and copper. Routine blood tests cannot detect chronic heavy metal poisoning, however tissue mineral analysis using atomic absorption is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Hair analysis is an invaluable screening tool which guides diet choices and a recommended supplement program for optimum health and wellness.
Obtaining a Hair Sample
We need approximately 125 mg (about ½ Tablespoon) taken as close to the skin as possible. Take from the base of the mane for horses and from the chest area for dogs and cats. The hair should be no longer than 1-1/2 inches. For horses and/or for long-haired dogs and cats cut the extra length off and keep the 1-1/2 inch section which was closest to their skin. For outdoor animals wash the testing area with rubbing alcohol and let dry completely before taking the sample.
Place the hair sample in the provided envelope or in a paper envelope. Do not use plastic or zip-lock baggies and do not tape the sample to a piece of paper or put it in aluminum foil. Plastic, glue and aluminum will contaminate the hair sample.
Return the envelope with sample to Riva’s Remedies along with the completed Intake Form and a picture of your pet. You may also email the picture and/or email/fax the intake form.
Cost per horse: $165 CDN
You can either include a cheque with your sample or the order desk will contact you for billing information on receipt of the hair sample.
Please allow 2-3 weeks for processing the results.
The report includes a bar graph which measures 21 minerals and their deficiencies, ratios and imbalances as well as toxic metals. Riva’s Remedies will include additional information on any health problems, organ dysfunction, stress levels and/or dietary recommendations as indicated by the analysis. A recommended supplement and remedy program will also be included to correct any nutritional imbalances and/or health problems.
